Waves of Change: Advisory program for sustainable water and energy solutions

Project duration: May 16, 2025 – May 15, 2027
Funded by: German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) as part of the program "Nachhaltig wirken – Support for public-benefit-oriented enterprises", co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+)
Project Objective
With Waves of Change, Boreal Light offers a nationwide advisory program specifically aimed at public-benefit-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The project supports organizations that embed ecological and social responsibility into their core activities and seek to actively contribute to climate protection, resource efficiency, and sustainable development — both in Germany and internationally.
The program helps these enterprises identify and implement practical and technically sound solutions in the fields of sustainable water treatment and renewable energy. Its aim is to strengthen the capacity of these mission-driven organizations to act in an environmentally and socially responsible way — with a particular focus on global South regions, underserved areas, and rural contexts.
The program targets both domestically active organizations (e.g., in education, agriculture, care, and community services) and internationally engaged enterprises working in Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, or other regions. The public funding allows them access to expert support that would otherwise be unavailable or financially inaccessible.
What We Offer
Waves of Change combines structured training with customized technical assistance. The program is tailored to the practical realities of mission-driven SMEs and includes the following components:
1. Seminar Series
We offer interactive workshops on sustainable technologies in the fields of water and energy. Topics include water quality, decentralized solar-powered treatment systems, energy-efficient pump solutions, and safe implementation practices. The training is highly practice-oriented, supported by real-world case studies and exercises. The sessions are delivered both in person and online to ensure flexible and inclusive participation.
2. Individual Consulting
Selected enterprises benefit from one-on-one consulting, where our technical experts develop tailored strategies together with the participants. Support includes identifying suitable technologies, improving infrastructure, and optimizing workflows for sustainability. The goal is to empower organizations to make and implement effective decisions—whether operating locally or in international development contexts.
3. Practical Materials and Digital Tools
We provide implementation-oriented materials, including technical guides, checklists, templates, and how-to resources. These materials are designed for long-term use and are adaptable to different sectors such as agriculture, education, or social services. They aim to support autonomous knowledge application, even beyond the project duration.
4. Network Support and Visibility
The project is embedded in a broader ecosystem through strong partnerships, including the Afrika-Verein of German Business, German Water Partnership, and the Eastern Committee of German Business. Participating enterprises gain not only technical assistance but also visibility, access to networks, and potential new cooperation opportunities.
Long-Term Impact
Waves of Change contributes to the broader ecological and social transformation by equipping mission-driven SMEs with the knowledge and tools they need to implement sustainable technologies. The project directly supports the achievement of German and EU climate targets by reducing emissions and water use while promoting innovation and resilience.
Because the program focuses on building long-term capacity, participating organizations are not only supported in the short term but also empowered to independently implement sustainable practices in the future. By combining knowledge, implementation, and networking, the project helps scale practical climate solutions across sectors.
